Pursuant to House Resolution 257 of 1984, The Select Committee to Investigate Limerick Unit II was created. This Select Committee was chosen to investigate the necessity of having the Limerick Unit II of the Philadelphia Electric Company. The committee was responsible for determining whether or not there were less expensive alternatives which would make the cancellation of the project desirable. The members assigned to the committee were James J.A. Gallagher (Chairman), Chaka Fattah, James C. Greenwood, William R. Lloyd, Jr., Samuel Morris, Robert Reber, Jr., Frank Salvatore and George E. Saurman. The committee heard testimony from the Public Utility Commission, the Philadelphia Electric Company and many other organizations and concerned citizens. Materials were submitted for their review by the Public Utility Commission and the Electric Company, and were later introduced as exhibits. After an extensive investigation, the Committee recommended that the construction of Limerick II should not be completed. The committee left the final decision up to the Public Utility Commission who� was conducting their own review of the project. The Members recommended that the PUC analyze whether or not the benefits of the plant outweighed its costs, realizing that the completion of the plant could potentially have a disastrous effect on the Pennsylvania economy as well as great financial strain for PUC. The final report was submitted to the House of Representatives on November 28, 1984. This collection is arranged alphabetically by folder subject. The bulk of the material consists of written testimony given by various organizations and businesses as well as the exhibits that were used in the creation of the final report.
