Scope and Contents
Martha G. Thomas was a Representative from Chester County and was the Great-Aunt of Barbara McIlvaine Smith. She was born in Whitford, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on February 13, 1869. She attended Bryn Mawr College and graduated in 1889. Her background occupation was a farmer. She was chair of the Women’s Committee, Council of Defense for Chester County (1917-1919). A board member of the Chester County Hospital, School of Horticulture for Women, Ambler, Pennsylvania. She was also treasurer of the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters. Martha was elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1922 and 1924, but was not a candidate for reelection to the House in the 1926 General election. She died on June 26, 1942 in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Martha is buried in Downingtown Friends Meetinghouse Cemetery, Downingtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
