Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Located in Columbia County, the borough of Centralia has been the home to an underground mine fire since 1962, causing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to claim all properties under eminent domain in 1992. The population was reduced to very few families living in the borough as of 2010, even though the postal zip code was revoked in 2002. Although the fire began in 1962, it wasn't until 1979 that the problem was at its peak. In 1984, the U.S. Congress allocated funding to aid in relocating families and businesses to nearby communities. This series includes many letters from constituents regarding leaving versus staying and many requests for funding. Also included are newsclippings as well as various reports and studies done on the borough, the mine fire, the health hazards, and financial implications. Belfanti's correspondence with members of Congress, the Governor's Office, and various departments under the Governor, are included in the General Centralia Files.
