biographical statement
The House Education Committee's existence is long standing and has evolved with the changing needs of the Commonwealth's education programs. As far back as records show, the Education Committee was in existance in 1802 - 1812. There was a hiatius from 1813-1818. It resumed meeting in 1819 and has continued until the present.
A wide variety of topics are typically covered: problems in the public and private schools, higher education, basic education, early education, urban education, and special education. Over the years, special emphasis has been placed on school violence, shortages of principals, fulltime classroom teachers and substitute teachers, changes to teacher certification law, current use of the PA system of School Assessments (PSSA), increasing costs of higher education, and student loan forgiveness. More recently, increasing numbers of students with Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have required work for implementing care of these special needs in the classroom.
Generally, the Education Committee divides into three Subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Higher Education; the Subcommittee on Basic Education; and the Subcommittee on Special Education.
