Scope and Contents

The Education Committee records from the 2003-2004 session, the Republicans in the Majority. The Chairs were Jess Stairs (Majority) and James R. Roebuck, Jr. (Minority). The Chairs of the Subcommittee on Higher Education were Fred McIlhattan (Majority) and Lawrence H. Curry (Minority). The Chairs of the Subcommittee on Basic Education were Samuel E. Rohrer (Majority) and Thaddeus Kirkland (Minority). The Secretaries were Ronald E. Miller (Majority) and John T. Yudichak (Minority).

The collection also contains the records of the Commission on Rural Education (CORE) established by House Resolution 8 of 2003. This Commission was to examine and study the status of rural education in the Commonwealth and make recommendations for enhancing the quality of education in rural communities.

Pursuant to House Rule 45 of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (titled “Powers and Duties of Standing Committees and Subcommittees”) governing the management and disposition of historically valuable committee material, the secretary of the committee must record the attendance of Members and any votes taken, the minutes of the meeting and records, bills, and other papers in the possession of committees and subcommittees which must be submitted to the Chief Clerk at the end of every two year legislative session for permanent archival storage.
