biographical statement
The term “urban affairs” refers primarily to the largest cities within the Commonwealth namely Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (often referred to as cities of the first class). However, over the years, it has become increasingly important to allow the term urban affairs to incorporate smaller urban centers, cities numbering between 50,000-100,000 people with significant minority populations and/or high unemployment (often referred to as cities of the second and third class). The purpose of the Urban Affairs Committee is to address issues relating to employment, housing, health care, economic development, crime, and business concerns relating to the cities of Pennsylvania. The urban policy put forth from the committee must provide resources (financial and others) that will be necessary to promote growth and development within these targeted areas. The Urban Affairs Committee suggests policies and programs that focus on the less affluent within our cities. Meetings, public hearings, tours, and the establishment of special sub-committees, ensure that major improvements are outlined and the opportunity given to make the most beneficial impact.
