House. Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee
biographical statement
In 1995, the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee's name changed to the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee in order to better describe the types of issues the Committee was addressing. A standing committee focusing on the military and Pennsylvania's veterans has existed from at least the time of the Civil War and has always had important legislative concerns. However, over time, there has been an equal focus on emergency preparedness and disaster planning that goes beyond the standard military issues and veteran concerns.
The Committee typically deals with all military issues, especially the Pennsylvania National Guard and Commonwealth military bases such as Fort Indiantown Gap. Further, veteran concerns are ever-present and the Committee works on legislation on benefits, veterans' homes, healthcare and education for veterans and families and veterans' cemeteries, to name only a small number of issues.
In addition, the Committee addresses issues such as terrorism, natural disasters, and accidents; and more importantly, the Commonwealth's preparedness to deal with such events.
