Scope and Contents

The 1981-1982 Consumer Affairs Committee was chaired by Republican, Lee C. Taddonio (majority). The Subcommittee Chairman on Public Utilities was Republican. Stephen F. Freind. The Secretary was Republican, Kathrynann W Durham.

During the 1981-1982 period in which this committee operated, some of the main focuses were to prevent fraudulent advertisement or business efforts on the parts of several different companies as well as conducting inspections on several Public Utilities in the construction and electrical generating unit fields (i.e. Three Mile Island).

Topics of discussion include, increased coal usage for generating electricity, investigations on dental services (mainly in western PA), tax reform codes, control of consumer commodity pricing and the maintenance of certain criteria and standards within companies.

Pursuant to House Rule 45 of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (titled “Powers and Duties of Standing Committees and Subcommittees”) governing the management and disposition of historically valuable committee material, the secretary of the committee must record the attendance of Members and any votes taken, the minutes of the meeting and records, bills, and other papers in the possession of committees and subcommittees which must be submitted to the Chief Clerk at the end of every two year legislative session for permanent archival storage.
