Papers of Paul I. Clymer, 1968-2015
Scope and Contents
This collection includes materials primarily from Paul Clymer's time as a member of the House of Representatives from 1981-2014. A large portion of the collection is made up of subject files. Clymer was a member of the Gaming Oversight Committee, which he chaired during the 2007-2008 session, and he strongly opposed gambling, so about half of the collection consists of a large subject file on gambling. This file includes his research on the downsides of gambling, as well as legislation he repreatedly introduced attempting to ban casinos near national parks, require casinos to send their patrons monthly statements, require entrance fees for casinos, and otherwise restrict gambling in Pennsylvania. Another large subject file covers the work of the Capitol Preservation Committee, of which Clymer was chairman from 1999-2014. This committee was involved in the preservation and restoration of the Capitol building. Clymer was also a proponent of creationism, the religious belief that the universe was created by an omnipotent Creator. As a member of the Education Committee, which he chaired from 2009 to 2014, he wanted schools to teach creationism as an alternative to evolution, so there is a subject file on this topic. The final large subject file in the collection covers Clymer's work for the preservation of the Gettysburg battlefields and monuments. Clymer was the chairman of the Pennsylvania Monuments at Gettysburg Restoration Committee, and he was involved in sponsoring legislation and fundraising for this project.
