The House Health and Human Services Committee regularly considers bills dealing with a wide variety of issues concerning health care and various services provided by the state. Some topics include mental health, availability of health care, patients’ rights, standards for medical facilities, and the keeping and issuing of vital statistics. The Health and Human Services Committee reviews regulations of the Department of Health.

During the 2001-2002 session, the Health and Human Services Committee again considered establishing a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program. They also reported House Bill 2273, which creates a grant program to de-stigmatize mental illness. A public hearing was also held with the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee concerning the health hazards of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) an additive to gasoline. House Bill 2068, which would create a Prescription Drug Commission, was also reported.
