Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Special Committee to Examine Matters Related to the Nuclear Accident at Three Mile Island pursuant to House Resolution 48 is an outstanding resource for researchers interested in the Three Mile Island (TMI) Accident, nuclear energy, emergency planning, and recovery from disaster.

The Special Committee held public hearings and meetings in an attempt to better understand mistakes and successes during the accident as well as during the recovery process. These hearing, public meeting and briefing files contain very detailed minutes which may be helpful to researchers with less technical knowledge as they are efficient summaries of the proceedings. The collection also contains reports written by many groups, notably, the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island, the Gover nor's Commission on Three Mile Island and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The Special Committee also submitted three reports: "Three Mile Island Nuclear Accident: Preliminary Report," by Representative Bernard F. O'Brien, April 30, 1979, housed in Box 1, Folder 28; "TMI Report," by the Democratic Members of the Special Committee to Examine Matters Related to the Nuclear Accident at Three Mile Island, pursuant to House Resolution 48, October 1979, housed in Box 1, Folder 39; and the Special Committee's final report "Three Mile Island Report," by the Special Committee to Examine Matters Related to the Nuclear Accident at Three Mile Island, pursuant to House Resolution 48, January 1980, housed in Box 2, Folder 3.

The correspondence files are also an excellent resource with correspondence to and from constituents and to and from government officials and experts regarding issues and testifying before the committee. Often the correspondence contains attached documents and material.

Most notable in the Committee Work Files are the TMI Newsletters issued by Chairman Jim Wright which provide updates on the progress of the Special Committee.

Subject files include a variety of materials including research, reports and resources generated prior to and after the accident.

Significant press was generated during and after the Three Mile Island Accident (TMI), but this collection contains only a small sampling.
