The 1983-1984 Health and Welfare Committee focused specifically on analyzing and amending the Public Welfare Code in addition to discussing a wide range of health and welfare related topics, including how to spend the excess state lottery funds and medical facility employees. The collection includes multiple boxes of Subject Files containing research, correspondence and additional information on subjects that the Committee took special interest in, such as Alcohol Abuse, Drug Abuse, Mental Illness (ADM), public welfare and homelessness. The 1983-1984 Health and Welfare Committee was chaired by Democrat James D. Barber. Leland M. Beloff served as the Subcommittee Chairman on Health, William Wachob served as Subcommittee Chairman on Welfare, Joseph M. Hoeffel, III served as Subcommittee Chairman on Youth and Aging and Michael M. Dawida served as Secretary. William K. Klingaman, Sr. served as Republican (Minority) Chair. Leonard Q. Gruppo served as Subcommittee Chairman on Health, John E. Peterson served as Subcommittee Chairman on Welfare and Joseph Lashinger served as Subcommittee Chairman on Youth and Aging.
