Biography

Thomas P. Murt, was born in 1960 in Abington, Montgomery County. Murt graduated from Archbishop Wood High School in 1978. He earned a B.S. degree in economics from Pennsylvania State University in 1982. Later he obtained a M.A. in education at La Salle University in 1988. He received a teaching certificate in business education at Gwynedd-Mercy College in 1997. Murt also attended Temple University where he took courses in Ed.D., educational administration and economics. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army Reserves (1990-2008). During his military career, he served active duty in the 4th Infantry Division (2003-2004) and received the Army’s Commendation Medal. Prior to becoming a Member of the, Murt was a faculty member (business department) and assistant director of the University Counseling and Advising Center at Pennsylvania State University, Abington. He was also the associate director of admissions and head wrestling coach at La Salle University. In his district, Murt served as the school director, elected commissioner for Upper Moreland Township, as well as, authored “Voice from Iraq,” a weekly newspaper column (2003-2004). Murt was elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 2007 term, and was reelected to the House for 6 more consecutive terms. He was appointed to the Pennsylvania Statewide Suicide Prevention Task Force (2019-2020). Murt did not seek reelection to the House in 2020.
