Biographical Statement

Gerald Kaufman was born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on June 14, 1932. After graduating from Kiski High School, he graduated from Yale University in 1954 and from Columbia University Law School in 1957. Following his education, Kaufman served in the United States army in 1957 and spent 6 years in the US Army Reserves. He worked as a lawyer, the chairman for the Allegheny County Council on Civil Rights, a contributor to the National Municipal League Reporter, and a consultant for the Office of Economic Opportunity in Allegheny County. Kaufman was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat to represent the 23rd legislative district in 1966. He served two subsequent terms. While in office, Kaufman's legislation focused on civil rights, public welfare, and education opportunities. Kaufman was not a candidate for reelection in 1972.
