Biography

Harold F. Mowery Jr. was born January 4, 1930 in Chambersburg, PA. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1954 with a B.A. in economics and psychology. After college, he went into the insurance business. In 1966 he established Professional Insurance Services, Inc. In 1970 he ran for State Representative of the 87th district in Cumberland County, but lost in the Republican primary. He ran again in 1976 and successfully won the 87th district’s seat, which he held until 1990. He served on the Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation Committee, the Pennsylvania Public Television Network Commission, and the State Employees’ Retirement System Board. He retired to return to his insurance businesses, but accepted Barbara Hafer’s offer to be her running mate for the 1990 gubernatorial election. He returned to politics in 1992 after losing the lieutenant governorship, this time running for State Senate. He won the 31st district seat in Perry, York, and Cumberland counties, and held it until his retirement in 2004. In the Senate he served as Chairman on the Health and Welfare Committee. He retired from politics again in 2004 and later died on March 3, 2014.

Scope and Contents This collection consists mostly of DVDs of Mowery's TV appearances as well as newspaper clippings from Harold Mowery's elections to the House of Representatives, failed bid for Lieutenant Govorner in 1990, subsequent elections to the State Senate, and some of the legislation he proposed from 1970-2004. Researchers interested in Harold Mowery’s political career, the 1990 gubernatorial race, and understanding the positions and the role of the State Republican Party and how it evolved over time...
