Biography

George Wallace Delamater, born March 31, 1849, in Meadville, Crawford County, PA. Attended public school. Graduate from Allegheny College. Graduate from Harvard Law School. Elected mayor of Meadville, Crawford County, PA, 1876. Head of Delamater and Co. banking, which failed in 1892 and he was found guilty of embezzlement. Director of Merchants National Bank, Meadville. President of the Meadsville and Linesville Railroad. President of the Meadville Fuel Gas Co. Served in the Electoral College, 1886, voting for Garfield. Served a Republican State Senator from 1887 until 1890. Unsuccesful election as Governorn, 1890. He worked for Prudential Life Insurance. Mr. Delamater was very despondent about the recent deaths of his son and father, and shot himself in his office in the Diamond Banking Building. Died in Pittsburgh, PA, August 7, 1907.

Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection of Cabinet Cards was purchased from Ebay in 2008. Included are photographs of 7 former House Members, 11 former Senators and 6 unidentified men. These photographs provide a rare glimpse of the men who served in Pennsylvania politics during the 1880's and 1890's. Sixteen of the cards are signed. Twenty of the photographs were taken by the Le Rue Lemer photographic studios which was located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and was responsible for the photographs in several books...
