House. Mines and Minerals Committee
biographical statement
In 1975, the Mines and Minerals Committee was renamed Mines and Energy Management Committee and it was in effect until 1988. In 1989, a subcommittee on mining was established under the Conservation Committee. 1994 was the last year the Conservation Committee existed as a standing committee. For the 1995-1996 session the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee was established to handle all issues previously covered by the Conservation Committee, the Mines and Energy Management Committee and the Mines and Minerals.
The Mines and Minerals Committee was concerned with most of the problems that affect the environment, both natural and man-made. A big responsibility for the committee was to handle all issues of the coalmines in Pennsylvania. Deep Mine safety, surface-mine problems, abandoned mine problems, clean coal technology, and mine drainage were all studied by the committee. The committee also studied landfill safety and wetland problems.
The committee also focused on energy problems throughout Pennsylvania. The committee studied hydroelectric plants, electrical and gas utilities, and oil and gas utilities.
