biographical statement
The Transportation Committee has been in existence for many years, beginning in 1968. Its name originated as Highways (1931 - 1967). An additional committee was added called Motor Vehicles (1937 - 1962). Motor Vehicles became Motor Vehicles and Highway Safety (1963 - 1967). Then in 1968, Motor Vehicles and Highway Safety split into two: Highway Safety (1968 - 1969) and Transportation (1968 - Present). Highway Safety only lasted one session before becoming Transportaion Safety (1970 - 1971), which also lasted only one session. The remaining committee, Transporation is the committee still in existance.
It addresses the concerns and needs of the Commonwealth in terms of roads, highways, bridges, waterways, ports, rail and air. The Committee generally deals with topics such as the conditions/construction of bridges and roadways in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, school buses, high speed rail, port authorities and public transportation. They also deal with transportation safety issues including automobile insurance, speeding and speed limits, driving under the influence and/or while intoxicated and driver education programs. Environmental concerns including emissions, alternative fuels and public transportation alternatives are discussed in nearly every session.
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives began collecting Committee Records in 1979. At that point, the Transportation Committee divided into three subcommittees: Highways, Public Transportation and Transportation Safety. In 1981, a subcommittee on Aviation was added and in 1995, the subcommittee on Railroads was added. The House Archives holds Transportation Committee Records from 1975-1976 and from 1979 to the present.
